How To Stay Body Image Positive

This is something that I have been wanting to talk about for a while now. When I thought about starting a blog the one thing that I knew for sure I would be writing a post about was body image. There are so many ideas out there about body image and I just wasn’t sure if what I had to say would be any different. Then I thought to myself that regardless of if it is different or not I am passionate about others feeling comfortable in their own skin. Society has this “standard” or what I like to call “lies” of what we should look like and how we should perceive ourselves. We see models, actors & others in our lives that we envy because of the way they look. Albeit this is changing some – but in all honesty it is on a smaller scale. Who is society to tell us that we are too skinny, not skinny enough, and that we don’t look good unless we look like the super models. Well I am here to tell you that is a lie! That does not have to be your view of what you want or your standard infact I am here to tell you it shouldn’t be! First and foremost I think that it is important for everyone to feel comfortable in their own body! We would never let anyone tell us how to live our life….. so why do we let others dictate what we feel is “beautiful”?

I think the best way to stay body image positive is not comparing yourself to others. And not allowing others/society to define you! But if I am being honest this one is so hard to do! We do this with more than just body image but in reality we shouldn’t. We were all made unique & that is the beauty of it. We will never look like someone else because that is impossible. There is beauty in the fact that we are unique.

First and foremost thing is that are you comfortable in your own skin! Are you healthy? Are you doing what you want to do? I think being body image positive requires us to really ask ourselves these questions without trying to taint it with what others think/say and what society thinks/says.

A while ago I choose to not let others define me, I choose to not let society or others tell me how I should look, instead I looked deep into my own self & asked myself the same questions I have asked you. Am I comfortable in my own skin? If not, why not? Does it have to do with others or my misconceptions of what society tells us is beautiful? Am I healthy? It took a lot for me to really go deep into my own thoughts about this and to try and separate what I felt was true & what I heard from others. And I will be the first to tell you that I am far from perfect at staying body image positive, however, I know that I am beautiful & unique & that is what makes me who I am & that is what makes me beautiful!

I am hear to tell you that you do not have to listen to the lies out there that beauty is only defined by one thing. You do not have to listen to what others tell you about yourself. Because the reality is you know yourself best & others will always put their own standards on you. That is why it is important to have your own standards for yourself & boundaries to know when to let the things that others say go.

As Theodore Roosevelt said “Comparison is the thief of Joy”.

In summary, try not to compare yourself to others, question assumptions you make about yourself, define your own standard of beauty, get comfortable in your own skin, stay positive as a whole – which will in turn help you stay body image positive, embrace your uniqueness & all that comes with it! And support one another on this journey. The world can be a cruel place so lets encourage one another!
